What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a branch of medicine which specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders of joints and muscles of the body, particularly of the spine and how this may affect the nervous system. Treatment typically involves manipulation and muscle work but can vary depending on the person and condition.
What do Chiropractors Treat?
Many joint and muscular aches and pains are treated effectively, the commonest problems are:- Low back and leg pain Neck and arm pain Joint pains:- shoulder, hip, elbow, knee Trapped nerves Headaches and Facial pain Sports and Whiplash injuries.
The Initial Consultation.
This lasts approximately an hour and a thorough history is taken about the complaint and relevant past health history, along with an appropriate examination of the neuromusculoskeletal system (nerves, muscles and joints). If necessary X-rays and other tests may be ordered, if these are not necessary then treatment may be offered.
Treatment
Prior to the first treatment whether part of the initial consultation or not, an explanation of what is wrong with you will be given in clear plain and understandable language. Subsequent treatments typically last 30 minutes and would be tailored to the condition and person but would normally be comprised of Sacro- Occipital Technique, Cranioscral Therapy, joint manipulation, muscle work and home exercises and advice.

Joint manipulation is a manual non-painful technique which is applied to joints where a restriction is felt. This restriction can lead to pain, inflammation and muscle spasm, the manipulation is performed to increase the mobility in the problem joint. There may be an audible click at the time of manipulation.
Muscle work is done to balance and reduce muscle spasm around the area. There are a number of techniques which may be combined or individually. Trigger point therapy and soft tissue work may be performed by the practitioner. Home exercises of stretching and strengthening may also be suggested to help recovery and aid in preventing recurrences. Ergonomic and postural advice may also be provided as appropriate.

Sacro-Occipital Technique is an advanced chiropractic technique which can aid diagnosis and treatment. The concept of SOT is that the skull, spine and pelvis are one unit and a dysfunction in one area of the unit will affect the whole system. Its integrated approach allows muscles and joints to be corrected simultaneously.

Craniosacral Therapy works from the cranium to the pelvis focusing mainly on the body’s membrane network and aiding the normal flow of fluid through these membranes by working on the areas where the membranes attach. It is a gentle hands on technique.
